Man Pleads Not Guilty in 2005 Illinois Slayings

Posted: Updated:

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) - A former Marine who was sentenced to death this year in the slaying of a man in Virginia has pleaded not guilty in the 2005 slayings of two little girls in northern Illinois.

In a Lake County courtroom, 26-year-old Jorge Torrez entered his plea on Thursday, days after he was returned to Illinois from Virginia.

Authorities contend that 8-year-old Laura Hobbs and 9-year-old Krystal Tobias were playing in a Zion, Illinois, forest preserve when Torrez stabbed them to death.

Laura Hobbs' father, Jerry Hobbs, spent five years in jail after giving what he later said was a false confession. He was set free after DNA evidence linked Torrez to the slayings.

In May, Torrez, a native of Zion, was convicted in the slaying of a sailor in northern Virginia.
