Kent County Woman Killed in Newark Crash

Posted:
NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating a two-vehicle crash that killed a 22-year-old woman from Kent County.

Police say the crash happened around 1:17 a.m. Sunday morning as an unidentified male was operating a 2007 Nissan Pathfinder in the left hand lane of westbound Pulaski Highway approaching the intersection of Brookmont Drive. They say the operator failed to stop for the red light for westbound US Rt. 40 traffic and entered the intersection of Brookmont Drive at an apparent high rate of speed. The front end of the Pathfinder hit the side of a 2013 Nissan Altima, which was being driven by Alec E. Clark, 18, of Wilmington. Both vehicles came to a stop on the north side of US Rt. 40 just west of Brookmont Drive.

The front seat passenger of the Altima, Alexis DeFrancesco, 22, of Hartly, was taken to Christiana Hospital Trauma Center, where she was pronounced dead. DeFrancesco was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Clark, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was taken to Christiana Hospital, where he is in critical condition.

The driver of the Nissan Pathfinder was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was taken to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center and is in critical condition. His identification has not been determined at this time.

The crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit and charges are expected. The westbound lands of US Rt. 40 were closed for about 4 hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
