SALISBURY, Md.- Wicomico County native Sgt. Major Wardell Turner was killed in action on Monday in Afghanistan.

Turner attended James M. Bennett High School in Salisbury and graduated in 1984. He was a star football player who went on to continue his education and play football for Towson University.

Turner had a wife, Kathy, and five children, including four sons - one of whom is also serving - and one daughter. Turner was 48.

Turner loved serving his country and was in the service for nearly 25 years. His sister, Wauleah Goslee, said he was about a year and a half away from retiring.

"I did have my moment when I first heard but right now we have not laid him to rest yet, so I can't tell you further what's going to happen out of that ordeal, but it's just going to be hard trying to live without him," Goslee said.

Turner's mother, Wanda Turner, said she will always remember how he made her laugh and gave her kisses and hugs.

"Letting go of someone you love is never easy," she said. "But when it's your child, it's not just hard, it's unnatural."

Wauleah said Turner's son Devin, who is also serving, is flying back with his father's body.
