Shopping Safely Thanksgiving Weekend

Posted:

MARYLAND- Shop safely: that is the message from AAA Mid-Atlantic this holiday season.

AAA urges shoppers to use caution Thanksgiving weekend, especially in dark parking lots and garages.

“Whether it's the thrill of holiday shopping hustle and bustle, the search for the perfect Christmas gift, or panic that there is less than a month left before Christmas Day, holiday shopping should not come at the expense of safety,” Ragina Cooper Averella said, manager of public and government affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic. “This year more retailers are opening earlier than ever before, just after dinner on Thanksgiving night, while others will open before daybreak on Black Friday,” Averella added.

AAA Mid-Atlantic advises shoppers to be aware of their surroundings, especially in dark parking lots, and stay alert while out and about.

According to the National Retail Federation, 25.6 million people say they will be out shopping for Thanksgiving day deals and 95.5 million people say they will be out shopping on Black Friday.

AAA encourages shoppers to be patient and alert while driving through crowded parking lots.

“Careless and inattentive driving in these tight areas could result in additional holiday expenses, including fender-benders, personal injuries and a general Grinch-like attitude,” Averella said.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, approximately 20 percent of all vehicle collisions that result in damage claims happen in parking lots. AAA urges you to not be counted in that number this year.
