Autopsy Shows Virginia Woman Was Strangled

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) - Patrick County's sheriff says a preliminary autopsy shows a Stuart woman died of asphyxia by strangulation.

Sheriff Dan Smith says that the body of 34-year-old Shelly Gravely was found Nov. 22 in Henry County near the base of bridge about a quarter mile from the Virginia-North Carolina border.

The mother of two had been reported missing on Nov. 14.

Smith says the state medical examiner in Roanoke performed the preliminary autopsy.

Police arrested Gravely's boyfriend, 35-year-old Anthony "Skeet" Joyce of Patrick Springs, in connection with the case on Nov. 21 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Smith says Joyce remains in custody on $1 million bond.
