Virginia Doctor Sentenced for Loan Fraud

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A Virginia Beach doctor convicted of defrauding lenders will spend nine years in prison.

Irfan M. Jameel was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Norfolk.

Jameel was accused of misrepresenting his medical career and his business' nature and status to obtain mortgage loans from two banks and a car loan from a credit union.

U.S. Attorney Dana Boente (BEN'-tay) says the 52-year-old doctor later defaulted on all of the loans.

Jameel was convicted in June on charges of wire fraud affecting a financial institution, financial institution fraud, and using a false Social Security number.
