Va. In-home Day Care Operator Charged

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (AP)- A Midlothian woman has been charged with a misdemeanor after a 1-year-old Chesterfield boy died from injuries suffered in a fire at an in-home day care.

Forty-six-year-old Laurie F. Underwood was charged with operating an unlicensed day care facility in her home. The Oct. 21 fire killed 1-year-old Joseph Matthew Allen.

Underwood faces a Jan. 6 hearing in Chesterfield General District Court.

Underwood was caring for eight children on the day of the fire at her home. State law requires a license for facilities that care for more than five children.

The child's parents, Matthew and Jacquelyn Allen, issued a statement Wednesday calling for more serious charges against Underwood.
