Virginia School Board: Restrooms Gender-Specific

Posted:

GLOUCESTER, Va. (AP) - The Gloucester County School Board has designated school restrooms as specific to students' biological genders.

The move comes in response to a transgender student's use of boys' restrooms at Gloucester High School.

Media outlets report that the board adopted the gender-specific restroom policy Tuesday night.

The decision drew criticism from the ACLU of Virginia and Equality Virginia. The groups say the policy is discriminatory and will violate federal Title IX requirements.

The ACLU of Virginia says officials at the high school decided this fall to allow 10th-grader Gavin Grimm, a transgender boy, to use boys' restrooms and locker rooms.

Grimm tells media outlets that he's disappointed by the school board's decision.

School Board Chairman Randy Burak says he believes the board's action was in the best interest for all students.
