Trooper, Driver Injured in Morning Crash

Posted:
BARCLAY, Md. - Maryland State Police say a state trooper and another driver were injured early Wednesday morning when their vehicles collided in Queen Anne's County near the intersection of MD Route 313 and MD Route 302 in Barclay, Maryland.

A Maryland State Police spokesperson says Senior Trooper John P. Sayles, 43, a 10-year veteran, who is assigned to the Centerville Barrack, was responding to an emergency service call when the accident happened.  Sayles was taken by emergency medical personnel to Chester River Hospital for the treatment of his injuries sustained in the crash. Police say he has been released and is currently recovering at home.

According to police, the operator of the other vehicle, a 2012 Chevrolet Impala, is identified as Bonnie L. Meta, 59, of the 1700-block of Dixon Tavern Road, in Barclay, Maryland. Maryland State Police say she was also transported by emergency medical personnel to Chester River Hospital for the treatment of her injuries sustained in the crash.

Maryland State Police say the preliminary investigation indicates that shortly after 6:00 a.m., Senior Trooper Sayles was responding, with emergency equipment activated, to assist with a personal injury crash.

Police say while Sayles was driving through the intersection of MD Route 313 and MD Route 302, a Chevrolet Impala failed to yield to the patrol car and drove into the path of the responding trooper. Police say the Impala sustained damage to the driver's rear of the vehicle while the state police vehicle sustained damage to the front end.

Maryland State Police say the crash investigation is being conducted by troopers from the Centerville Barrack. This investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
