Suspect in Custody in Baltimore Officer Shooting

Posted:

BALTIMORE (AP) - Baltimore police have arrested a suspect who allegedly shot a Baltimore Police officer on Sunday.

Donte Jones, 19, is now in custody and faces myriad charges including attempted murder in the shooting of Officer Andrew Groman, who underwent surgery and was recuperating Monday at a hospital.

Police officials said Groman and his partner stopped a silver Cadillac after another officer had smelled marijuana emanating from the car at a gas station on Gwynns Falls Parkway and radioed Groman for backup.

Charging documents show that after the stop Groman and other officers including two Coppin State University Police officers approached the car, which had four people inside. Police said the driver complied with officers' requests that he step out of the car. But when Groman asked Jones, who was sitting in the back seat, to show his hands and exit the vehicle, Jones refused. Documents show that Groman, after asking Jones multiple times to comply with his request, took out a stun gun and fired in his direction just as Jones pulled out a black revolver and fired, according to court papers. Jones then ran out of the car and behind a nearby house, where officers were able to place him under arrest. Once in custody, Jones confessed to the shooting, according to court papers.

According to Baltimore Police Deputy Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez, the bullet struck Groman below the area protected by the officer's bulletproof vest. Rodriguez said Jones is the only suspect who has been charged.

Rodriguez said at the time of the shooting Jones was on parole and probation, and has been arrested three times for gun-related offenses.
