Preliminary Firearm Deer Season Results Announced

Posted:
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Maryland's Department of Natural Resources has released it's preliminary results for the 2014 firearm dear season.

Hunters reported taking 34,053 deer during the popular two-week firearm deer season. Despite challenging weather conditions, including significant rain and wind on key hunting days, the total harvest was down less than seven percent compared to last season's two-week total of 36,572 deer.

More than 4,000 deer were taken on the few Sundays open during the two-week season, adding support to the ongoing value of Sunday hunting.

Hunters reported taking 22,422 antlerless white-tailed deer during the two weeks, more than double the number of antlered white-tailed deer taken (10,518). Focusing harvest on antlerless deer remains a fundamental component in the effort to manage the deer population in Maryland.

The harvest for sika deer increased, with hunters reporting 446 antlered and 667 antlerless sika deer taken compared to 394 antlered and 588 antlerless in 2013. The bag limit for antlerless sika deer was increased this year in response to rising agricultural damage complaints in the region. Hunters responded favorably by harvesting an estimated 32% more antlerless sika deer than last year.

Region A deer hunters (Garrett, Allegany, and western Washington counties) reported taking 4,119 white-tailed deer during the two-week season, down slightly from last year's harvest of 4,212. The Region A harvest was comprised of 2,378 antlered deer and 1,741 antlerless deer.

The Region B deer harvest decreased 8 percent from last year's 32,360 deer to 29,934 deer. The Region B total included 8,586 antlered deer and 21,348 antlerless deer.

Junior hunters reported taking 2,482 deer during the November Junior Deer Hunt weekend — a 6% increase from last year's 2,336 deer. Junior hunters registered 1,461 antlered deer and 1,021 antlerless deer.

Complete bag limits, season dates, deer registration procedures and hunting regulations can be found on the DNR Website. The 2014-15 Guide to Hunting and Trapping also contains detailed information about all of Maryland's hunting seasons.
