Red Foxes Spotted in Fenwick

Posted:

FENWICK ISLAND, De. - Fenwick Island residents are reporting more and more sightings of red foxes in the beach area.

Chris Marra, a carpenter working on a house right on the dunes, said he has seen multiple just this week.

"The first one I saw was a large red fox with gray all over its haunches and today I saw what appeared to be a younger fox," he said. "It was all red and beautiful, healthy looking animals."

According to DNREC wildlife official Joe Rogerson, the foxes build foxholes in the sand dunes and raise their pups there. They also do not have any natural predators in the area.

But, now they're venturing out into the public.

"They're very tame," explained three-year resident Sharon Bowlin. "They come right up to you, they don't destroy any dumpsters, I've never heard of them going up to kids or pets, they're very tame."

And why is that? Bowlin said she thinks it's because people feed them and take care of them like they are wild pets. Wild is the key word according to Rogerson.

"Feeding them is a disservice to them," he said. "It is not making them remain wild animals and it's putting your safety at risk as these animals are coming closer to you."

Rogerson said he only remembers three reported fox bites in the past ten years, but said as they get more used to people feeding them it could make them bolder and eventually attack. He explained if you do spot a fox, to harass and haze it to reassert a fear of humans.

One of the last remaining 1950's diner cars on Delmarva is now nothing but rubble.
