UPDATED: Newark School Bus Crash Sends Several Students to Hospital

Posted:

NEWARK, Del. - Delaware State Police are currently investigating a Tuesday morning school bus crash that left 11 children injured in Newark.

Troopers determined it happened around 7 a.m. on the property of the Shue Medill School, located at 1500 Capital Trail. According to police, 60-year-old Arlene Holden, of Newark, was driving the bus through the parking lot when she swerved to avoid hitting an SUV that had cut her off. Troopers say the bus then struck a light pole and came to a stop. The unidentified driver of the SUV drove off in an unknown direction.

Police say 23 students were on the bus at the time. Eleven of them were taken to A.I. Dupont Hospital for Children to be treated for minor injuries.

Police say Holden was transported to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center to be treated for minor injuries.

Delaware State Police's investigation into the crash is ongoing.
