Maryland State Police Warn of Business Scam in Salisbury

Posted:

SALISBURY, Md. - Maryland State Police are urging citizens to be wary of scams following an incident Tuesday involving a phony door-to-door salesman.

Troopers responded to the area of Cherry Way in Salisbury to investigate a report of suspicious activity.

Police say a resident told them a white male with red hair had knocked on the door of the resident's home at around 7 or 7:30 p.m., claiming to sell ADT Security. When the resident would not open the door, the “salesman” became agitated and demanded the resident open the door and let him in. According to Maryland State Police, the “salesman” eventually left, and the resident called 9-1-1.

Troopers say they contacted the name on the business card, Joseph VanArsdale. The individual who answered the phone said he/she did work for ADT Security. Troopers then contacted ADT Corporate Headquarters, who could not verify the individual's employment with the company.

Maryland State Police say telephone scams and identity theft are common during the holiday season. Scammers often use fear or intimidation tactics, like telling victims their loved ones have been incarcerated overseas and bail money must be sent right away or there is an overdue bill that must be paid immediately to avoid arrest. Scammers may promise cars or large sums of cash in exchange for small amounts of money sent to the “business” in the form of a money order. Any such instance should be reported to 9-1-1 immediately.
