"The Interview" To Air Christmas Night in Lewes

Posted:

LEWES, Del. - It was supposed to be a laid-back, Christmas comedy. Instead the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy - The Interview - has taken on a controversial life of its own. The movie was initially pulled from all theaters after Sony Pictures was hacked, allegedly by North Korea. This was likely due to the plot, in which Franco and Rogen are asked by the CIA to assassinate the North Korean leader.

Soon after pulling the movie, Sony changed their minds, giving theaters the permission to run the movie, but many did not. Major companies like Regal, AMC, Cinemark, and Carmike all decided that they would not be showing the film. However in Sussex County, the Movies at Midway in Lewes said that they were not afraid to show the controversial film.

The theater is showing the movie at 9:25 Christmas night. On following days, the movie will be shown twice at 1:40pm as well.

"We did this to give people the choice to make the decision on their own and to stand up for free speech, " said Tiffany Derrickson, whose family owns Midway.

She said that they are sending a clear message by doing this.

"Not to be scared of minor threats," she said. "And as I said North Korea had an agenda. And it's obvious what it is. Our agenda is that it is a comedy. People want to choose to see it and be entertained. That's what our business is. We're in the business of entertainment."

Midway is the only theater on Delmarva that is showing the movie. There are also two theaters in New Castle County that are showing the movie.

William Vent wasn't going to go, but decided to head to the theater Thursday in order to see what the debate was all about.

"Something that's caused this much chaos," he said. "I've got to see it."

Others like Brandon Berg said that he think it was a security mistake to show the movie.

"It's instigating," he said. "Because we've already been through enough with them. So putting more towards it - it's showing that honestly we want to start something. We want to try and get more attention than we need."
