Muskrat To Usher In New Year In Princess Anne

Posted:
PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- If you're not up to making the trip to New York City, and then have to fight through the crowds and traffic for the world famous confetti and ball drop at Times Square,  then maybe you'll want to see a popular Delmarva  "New Years Eve" celebration.

It's certainly different, and has a lot of people talking. Meet Marshall P. Muskrat, a stuffed muskrat sporting a black top hat. On Wednesday night, Marshall will be lowered 50 feet down onto Somerset Avenue in Princess Anne to ring in the new year.

The idea for using a muskrat drop started two years ago from town residents Dennis Williams and Ben Alder,  who wanted to come up with something that would be fun and family friendly in the Somerset county town.

Marshall, who got his name from students at nearby Greenwood Elementary School, will make the descent in a special box that was made at the Tawes Technology Center in Wetsover.

The party starts 9 p.m. with local businesses opening their doors plus music, food and beverage vendors on hand. Last year's first Queen Muskrat, April Deering, will be on hand to pass her crown to the new representative.

The festivities will begin Wednesday evening in downtown Princess Anne and finish with Marshall P. Muskrat bringing in a new year at the stroke of midnight 2015.

It wasn't more than two years ago when a part of Nanticoke road was destroyed due to a damaged drain pipe.

    Now, it is happening again.

As thousands of gallons of water are being relocated from one side of the Rockawalkin Creek to the other - the road remains closed for a significant period of time.
