PAINTER, Va. – It started out as a long shot recovery. With gunshot wounds to the face, tail, and throughout, one yellow lab is now surprising everyone.

“He eats everything in sight,” joked Melanie Parker, licensed veterinary technician at the Eastern Shore Animal Hospital in Painter, Va.

In mid-December, the pup, aptly named Longshot, was found lying in a ditch near Craddockville.

“The people who found him originally thought he was dead,” Parker said. “Once they realized he was alive they called animal control who went and got him.”

Parker says Longshot, who is around age 6, was in bad shape when he arrived at the animal hospital.

“For the first three or four days he did nothing,” she said. “He wouldn't eat or walk. He was on a lot of pain medications to keep him in a relaxed state.”

But, after another couple days, Longshot was back on his feet.

Parker says most of his wounds have healed up. The animal hospital is even hopeful Longshot will keep his eye, which suffered a gunshot wound.

As great as the news of the recovery is, there remains an upsetting part of this whole story.

“It's really sad,” Parker stated, “But I don't think we will ever know who did this.”

Thought some questions are likely to remain unanswered, it is good to see such great progress come from a long shot.
