Delaware Lawmaker Eyes Locks, Other School Safety Measures

DOVER, Del. (AP) - A House lawmaker once again is proposing that classroom doors in Delaware's public schools must be lockable from both sides.

A bill introduced by Glasgow Democrat Earl Jaques on Wednesday ahead of next week's start of the legislative session is similar to one he filed before last year's session. That bill, which was tabled, carried a price tag of about $4 million, based on an estimated $300 per door for more than 13,000 doors. But analysts noted that the cost could vary up to $600 per door.

Jacques says locking doors from the inside could help keep intruders out of classrooms.

Jacques introduced another bill Wednesday that requires all new school construction and major renovations to include intruder alarms and bulletproof glass in entrance areas and interior doors and windows.
