Selbyville Man Convicted of 11th DUI

SNOW HILL, Md.- Gerald Lee Lusby Jr., 43, of Selbyville, was found guilty in a Worcester County, Md. courtroom last week of driving while impaired. Lusby was also charged with driving under the influence, but during deliberations, the jury did not know this was his 11th offense related to driving while drunk, because Maryland law prevents juries knowing about prior offenses.

Lusby was ultimately sentenced to just one year behind bars, which is the maximum sentence for driving while impaired. In Maryland, for more than three DUI offenses, the maximum sentence is three years.

According to court documents, Lusby's charges date all the way back to 1991.

This most recent charge was in Ocean City on 127th street of Coastal Highway. The officer who arrested him said Lusby was "straddling the lane lines for approximately one block" and had "a faint odor of an alcoholic beverage" on his breath.

After 11 DUI charges though, other drivers are concerned, like Brenda Yung also of Selbyville.

"Wow that's horrible," she said. "I cant believe he would even take the chance of wanting to get caught again and maybe killing somebody by accident, it's just not right."

So how did Lusby even make it to his 11th run in with the law? Why was he still able to drive after all the previous incidents?

According to attorney William R. Hall, people don't always learn their lesson.

"Many repeat offenders, no matter if they are on probation, they will keep driving, unfortunately," he explained. "They're driving uninsured and they're driving suspended all of which could carry possible jail time but unfortunately some people just won't stop driving."

This means that one year from now, Lusby could be back on the road.

"It's just a matter of time before somebody gets horribly injured or killed," Hall said. "When you have subsequent offenders like this."
