Lawmaker: FBI Investigating Possible Campaign Theft

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A top-ranking Virginia state senator says the FBI has informed him that someone has stolen about $600,000 from his campaign finance accounts.

Fairfax County Democrat Sen. Richard L. Saslaw told reporters Wednesday that there's an ongoing investigation involving the theft from the accounts between 2013 and 2014.

Saslaw declined to say whom the FBI is investigating, but said it is not him. Saslaw, the senate minority leader who is one of his party's best fundraisers, said authorities uncovered the theft while conducting a "collateral" investigation into another matter. He said he expects charges to be forthcoming in the next couple of months.

A spokeswoman for the FBI did not immediately respond to a telephone call and email seeking comment.
