FRUITLAND, Md.- Maryland State Police say a patch of ice is believed to have been a contributing factor to several crashes that occurred Friday morning on the Route 13 bypass near Stockyard Road south of Fruitland.

Police said the northbound lanes of the bypass were the scene of four single-vehicle crashes. One of the crashes involved an Eastern Correctional Institution van occupied by two inmates and two correctional officers who had to be extricated from the vehicle. There were no serious injuries reported in that crash, police said.

Three other crashes involved vehicles going off the road and crashing into a ditch. All injuries were minor, police said. In one of those incidents, the operator was able to drive away after the vehicle was towed out of the ditch.

Shortly after 10 a.m. traffic was flowing again in both directions of the bypass.

Police said State Highway Administration crews assisted with cleanup and ice removal.
