Mid-Year Tuition Increase Proposal for Salisbury University

SALISBURY, Md.- Officials are proposing a mid-year tuition increase at several schools in Maryland, including Salisbury University.

The Baltimore Sun reports the proposal was discussed on Jan. 16 in response to a $40 million reduction in state funding for the 2015 fiscal year.

Under the proposal, the university would implement a two-percent increase for full-time undergraduate students. According to Salisbury University's Media Relations Director, Richard Culver, this would be a $62 increase. Culver said there would be an additional $5 increase per credit hour for part-time undergrads.

While there are reports of other plans being discussed to cut back at various universities, including hiring freezes and eliminating positions, Culver said for Salisbury University, “there are no plans to eliminate filled positions as a result of the current budget cut.”

Culver also mentioned several other plans to cut the budget. “SU plans to reduce facilities renewal expenditures, delay construction costs, use savings from a hiring freeze implemented last fall and also use a small amount of fund balance to offset the loss in allocation,” said Culver.
