Dover PD Believes Viral Video Hit Intended Target

Posted:

DOVER, Del.- It is the local video that got a worldwide audience of millions over the weekend - Dover Police officer MCpl. Jeff Davis was recorded lip-syncing to Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off."

The video was posted Friday afternoon. It was at nearly 15 million views on YouTube by Monday afternoon, and there have been millions of more views on other sites.

It even got the attention of Swift herself. She tweeted Sunday - "LOLOLOLOL THE SASS."

The video was initially a part of recognizing a milestone for Dover PD. The department produced the video to celebrate hitting 10,000 likes for its Facebook page. The city only has about 37,000 residents, so the department thought that was a big deal. But "big deal" doesn't begin to describe what the video has become.

Dover police say they have been shocked by the attention this video has received.

"It's been a whirlwind to say the least," said Lt. Jason Pires, a spokesman for the department. "We did not expect the attention that this video garnered, so for us, it's actually mind blowing."

Lt. Pires says they made it to help connect with people in and around Dover.

"We expected maybe local news to pick it up, maybe a few thousand views on our Facebook page."

And even though the video's reach went far beyond that - from Scandinavia to Australia - Lt. Pires thinks they still hit their target audience.

"No matter what goes on, no matter what attention we get across the world, our focus is still the city of Dover."

"I think it's nice when our community leaders, police officers have fun with different things," said Gerald Smith, a Dover resident WBOC spoke with Monday afternoon.

If you feel like there's something familiar about a viral video of a cop lip-syncing, there might be a reason. A video that shows two officers from the Rosenberg, Tx. Police Department lip-syncing to Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" went viral over the summer. Rosenberg was one of the departments Dover looked at when it started having a social media presence back in October 2013.

"Just like anything else in the police world, you know, you go see what's successful, and you go figure out how you can implement that at your police department," Lt. Pires said.

In summer 2013 Rosenberg PD started posting online photos of shoplifters in the city. Dover PD started doing the same thing this summer and cited Rosenberg as inspiration. Dover Police say the photos program has led to a drop in shoplifting cases in the city.

The department is acutely aware this viral moment in the sun is temporary. But the officers intend to make the most of it. MCpl. Davis will likely be making a series of national TV appearances very soon.
