Delaware Officials Welcome Chilean President to Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - State officials celebrated the strong trade ties between Delaware and Chile during a visit by the South American country's president to the Port of Wilmington.

Gov. Jack Markell, economic development director Alan Levin and members of Delaware's congressional delegation welcomed Chilean President Michelle Bachelet to the port on Tuesday.

Officials said Bachelet's visit was an opportunity to discuss ways the two countries can increase trade opportunities and strengthen business relationships.

The Wilmington port is a major East Coast gateway for Chilean fruit and has been accepting shipments from Chile since 1988.

Officials say the Chilean fruit business accounted for more than 167,000 pallets last year and was responsible for 835 jobs.
