Northern Va. Vet, 94, Who Served in 3 Wars Gets Purple Heart

Posted:

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP)- A 94-year-old northern Virginia veteran who fought in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, and survived a death march as a prisoner of war, has been awarded a Purple Heart.

Retired Army Maj. Jesse Baltazar of Falls Church was awarded the Purple Heart in a ceremony Tuesday in Arlington. He received it for being wounded when Japanese planes bombed his camp in the Philippines in 1942. Baltazar then survived a surgery in the jungle and later escaped the Bataan Death March during World War II.

Baltazar's medal wasn't awarded sooner because his WWII service records had been lost.

Baltazar says that he's grateful to finally get the Purple Heart and that his whole family got to witness it.

He says now they'll get to pass it on to the next generation.

One of the last remaining 1950's diner cars on Delmarva is now nothing but rubble.

The Seaford Eagle Diner was ripped down Tuesday morning so the owners can re-build a new restaurant on site. Owner Serkan Darilmaz says the diner was in such bad shape that renovating it would've come at an astronomical cost.
