Dover AFB: Two 75 mm Mustard Rounds Recovered from Seafood Facility

Posted:

DELAWARE – Two 75 mm mustard rounds have been recovered from a seafood processing facility in Delaware, according to Lt. Sarah Bergstein with Dover Air Force Base.

On Jan. 22, Dover AFB's 436th Explosive Ordnance Flight responded to and mitigated the potential hazards of the two mustard rounds, presumably dredged from the ocean during clamming operations.

The rounds have been stored on Dover AFB.

The base says it is working with the Army's Recovered Chemical Materiel Directorate (RCMD), US Army Chemical Materials Activity, and US Army 20th CBRNE Command (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive) to assess these items to determine if they contain chemical agent.

Assessment is scheduled for this week.

Dover AFB says there is no danger to military personnel or the surrounding community.

Since 2004, RCMD (formerly the Non-Stockpile Chemical Materiel Project) has completed eight missions to Dover AFB to destroy a total of 16 recovered chemical munitions, the most recent in August 2014.

These items were destroyed using the Explosive Destruction System (EDS). The EDS has successfully treated 1,855 items since entering service in 1999.

If a disposed ordnance is found, Dover AFB officials say do not make contact with the item. Move away and immediately call your local law enforcement agency.
