Maryland Adds 11,000 Jobs in December

BALTIMORE, Md. – Maryland added 11,000 jobs last month and drove down the state unemployment rate, according to data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

A preliminary survey shows that the December unemployment rate fell from 5.6 percent to 5.5 percent. Maryland Labor Secretary Kelly M. Schulz said the state is continuing its efforts to make Maryland the best place to work and do business.

“We're cultivating a thriving workforce, prepared with the skills needed by Maryland employers for today's in-demand jobs,” she said. “We've come a long way, but there is still a great deal of work yet to be done."

The BLS numbers show the sector with the most added jobs last month was Leisure and Hospitality, with 4,600 jobs.

The Mining, Logging and Construction Sector added 3,000 jobs in December. Education and Health Services gained 2,900 jobs. Trade, Transportation, and Utilities added 600 jobs. And the Manufacturing sector added 500.
