CLAYTON, Del.- Delaware State Police canceled a Gold Alert for a missing Clayton man after his body was found late Wednesday morning in the sand dunes on Woodland Beach.

Police said 48-year-old Mitchell G. McKinney was reported missing Tuesday evening by his wife who said he was depressed and possibly suicidal. She told troopers that around 4 o'clock that afternoon McKinney had been talking to her on the phone and making threats to harm himself with a handgun. His wife heard wind in the background and told police he may be in the Woodland Beach area where he often fishes.

According to police, troopers were unsuccessful locating McKinney in the early evening hours, but after examining the area again on Wednesday his body was found at around 11 a.m. in the sand dunes just south of Woodland Avenue. Police said McKinney's death appears to be from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Delaware Division of Forensic Science is still investigating the final cause and manner of death, but no foul play is suspected.
