Family Mourns Death of 10 Month Old Infant at Daycare

MILLSBORO, De. - "Tragic," "emotional," and just "hard."  These are all words used by Yolanda Soto to describe the death of her 10-month old infant nephew this Wednesday afternoon. The incident happened at the "Handy's Little Disciples" Daycare on Layton-Davis Road in Millsboro.

Toys and play-sets littered the backyard on Thursday afternoon, but for now the daycare facility is suspended, pending a police investigation.

The Delaware State Police said that a daycare worker tried to wake up the 10-month old boy Wednesday afternoon, and found him to be unresponsive. An ambulance was called and the baby was taken to Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, where he was pronounced dead.

"It was just a normal day," said Soto speaking of the morning before school.

Soto said that her sister was taking the loss of her first child "pretty hard."

"He went from a healthy boy one day to this," she said. "So it's hard."

The Delaware Office of Child Care Licensing said that the daycare has been licensed since 1998. The office said that the facility had their last state inspection on Nov. 5, 2014. The facility was licensed to serve up to nine children at a time.

The Delaware State Police is awaiting the autopsy results, to figure out what caused the death. Cpl. Gary Fournier described the initial observations.

"There were no visible signs of injury or trauma observed on the victim," he said.
