Dover Woman Killed, Several Injured in Multi-Vehicle Accident

Posted: Updated:
BEAR, Del. (WBOC/AP) - Delaware State Police say a Dover woman was killed Tuesday morning and several others were injured in a multi-vehicle crash on Route 13 near Bear.

Master Cpl. Jeffrey Hale says the crash happened around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday. Hale says Joseph Keyes, 66, of Dover was driving a 2008 Honda Accord on Route 13 in the northbound direction, just north of DE Route 71, at an apparent high rate of speed. Hale says Keyes attempted to swerve his vehicle to the left in an attempt to avoid striking a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado operated by 57-year-old John Bennett of Townsend.

Hale says Keyes' vehicle struck the left rear of the Silverado and then sideswiped the left side of another car, a 2003 Honda Accord driven by 56-year-old Doreen Wilson of Bear.

Hale says Keyes' vehicle then left the west edge of the roadway and began traveling northbound in the grass median toward the intersection of Hamburg Road, still at a high rate of speed. Hale says the vehicle then re-entered the northbound lanes of Rt. 13, where it struck the driver's side of a yet another vehicle, a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 driven by 45-year-old Antonio Blackwell, of New Castle.

Trooper say the impact of the collision caused Keyes' vehicle and the Dodge Ram to go into the intersection where they then struck a 2010 Dodge Challenger, driven by 40-year-old David S. Wilson, of Bear, as well as a 2010 Chrysler 300 driven by 56-year-old Richard Thomas, of Bear.

Catherine A. Keyes, 61, who was a passenger in her husband's vehicle, and who was properly restrained at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. Joseph Keyes was removed from the scene by Emergency Medical Services and transported to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where he is being treated for his serious injuries.

Antonio Blackwell, David Wilson, and Richard Thomas, who were all properly restrained at the time of the crash, were removed from the scene by EMS and transported to the Christiana Hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries. John Bennett and Doreen Wilson were not injured.

This crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit. Alcohol and the road conditions at the time of the crash do not appear to be contributing factors.

US Route 13 northbound at Hamburg Road was closed for approximately four hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
