Georgetown Man Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash

Posted: Updated:
GEORGETOWN, Del- Delaware State Police are investigating an early Thursday morning crash that claimed the life of a 19-year-old Georgetown man.
Police said the the incident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. as Benadigto Bonilla-Berduo was driving a 2002 Volkswagen GTI westbound on Route 9, about one mile west of Old Furnace Road, at an apparent high rate of speed. While attempting to negotiate a moderate right curve, police said the Volkswagen crossed into the eastbound lanes and exited the south side of the road.  Investigators said Bonilla-Berduo attempted to regain control of the vehicle before it crossed both lanes and exited the north side of the road where he again over-corrected, resulting in the vehicle to rotate counter-clockwise as it exited the south side of the road once again. Troopers said the passenger's side of the vehicle struck a utility pole, snapping the pole in half, and vaulting the vehicle into the air prior to it coming to a stop on its roof.
Bonilla-Berduo was not properly restrained and was ejected from the vehicle, police said.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The DSP Collision Reconstruction Unit continues its investigation into the incident. Investigators said alcohol and speed are considered factors in the crash.

Route 9, in the area of Sussex Technical High School, was closed for about three hours while Delaware Electric Cooperative crews worked to restore power and the crash was investigated and cleared.
