Delaware Group Donates Thousands of Warm "Hugs"

Posted:

DOVER, Del. - The Governor's Advisory Council for Exceptional Citizens held the "Heart 2 Heart Hugs" campaign today in an effort to provide warm blankets and clothes to children in need.

Held for the past five years, this drive has expanded from sleeping bags to a lot more. The group hopes to provide the more than 3,000 homeless and foster care children in Delaware with warmth this winter. Wendy Strauss is an organizer.

"This is really important because I went to a meeting many years ago and somebody told me the number of homeless children that we have and it just broke my heart, to think of them being out there cold," she said.

Natalie Way is a volunteer.

"It makes me feel really good to know that there are children who are truly worthy of the gifts that are provided and for them to be able to get them," she said.

With freezing temperatures this Valentine's Day weekend, Strauss said their mission is extra important.

"It's kind of sad to say," she explained. "But I love it when it's cold on the day that we do the distribution because it makes everybody in the room really realize how important it is for this event."

Dover Mayor Robin Christiansen spoke, as well as other homeless liaisons across the state.

After, volunteers grabbed trash bags to load up on cozy clothes to bring to thousands of kids throughout the winter.

New Waterfront Hotel Breaks Ground in O.C., Part 2

The location of a new waterfront hotel that recently broke ground in Ocean City is raising some eyebrows with neighbors in the downtown area.

The Cambria Hotel is being built in the vacant lot that sits just north of the Route 50 drawbridge, meaning it will be one of the first things drivers see headed into town.

Brian Plimack, who lives just behind the development, said the hotel is too much of a drastic change to the town's skyline.
