Cambridge's Police Chief Tours Schools, Says He Wants to Increase Police Presence

Posted:
CAMBRIDGE, Md.- In some cases, it may be an uphill battle. But that doesn't throw off Cambridge's new police chief, Dan Dvorak. He spent part of Thursday and a good chunk of Friday touring every school in the city.

"I want to provide a friendly face, a uniform. Get the kids to know our police department, know our officers, and be comfortable with us," said Dvorak.

Leading the way on these tours alongside each school's principal is superintendent Dr. Henry Wagner.

"This is all part of building on the already positive relationship we have with the Cambridge Police Department. Chief Dan, as he likes to be, called is bringing some additional perspectives and dimensions to the work with the school system," said Dr. Wagner.

Chief Dan said he wants better officer presence in schools by increasing visits to schools and the number of officers on that duty.

"The more positive contact we can have with the children, the better.  that one child," he paused, referencing an incident where a child screamed he was scared of police when Dvorak entered the room, "I don't get that too much where they don't want to come up and say hello. But it was nice, I was able to sit with him for a moment and earned a high five at the end of our conversation," said the chief.

And that's the goal, to not only protect our children, but show them that police are here to help.
