SALISBURY, Md.– The Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce beautification committee, City of Salisbury and Wicomico County's Stash Your Trash contributors and Eastern Shore Business Leadership Network are teaming up for the Sixth Annual Spring Spruce-Up on April 11 from 9 a.m. to noon.
ESBLN has recognized this date as Ability Awareness Day to celebrate and raise awareness for people with disabilities that can and want to work, while giving back to their community.
Teams of volunteers will work to clean up litter at the Salisbury Zoo in time for Earth Day.
“Since 2010, this event has maxed out in volunteer participation,” said Jackie Gast, director of the Eastern Shore Business Leadership Network, “We get so much done for the zoo and have a great time mulching, raking, planting, and repairing or anything the zoo needs us to do. We hope people will come out to encourage us and realize people with disabilities are just that – people!”
The beautification committee and Stash Your Trash organizers have their own event scheduled to support ESBLN's efforts, which is recognized as “Stash Your Trash Clean-Up Day.”
Volunteers will meet at the Wicomico County Youth and Civic Center at 8 a.m. on April 11 and be given gloves and trash bags for the day's event. All trash will be picked up by the Salisbury City Public Works and transported to a landfill.
The volunteer program started in 2014 as a youth-driven community project to address the issue of litter throughout Wicomico County. More than 150 people aged 5-17 hand-sewed a patchwork quilt for the public to sign and take the “Stash Your Trash” pledge. In result, 500 people signed the quilt on that day.
During this year's event, herons will be on display throughout the community as a reminder to this environmental cause.
