Whiteouts Reported As Snowstorm Sweeps Into Md.

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Maryland State Police are reporting whiteouts due to heavy snow and high winds in the far western part of the state as a storm sweeps in.

Police and the Maryland State Highway Administration are urging people to avoid driving Wednesday evening, including rush-hour commuters in the Baltimore-Washington area.

Transportation officials say there could be major delays unless motorists adjust their commuting schedules.

Virginia transportation officials also are urging caution. They have 700 trucks ready to treat northern Virginia roads.

The National Weather Service is predicting 1 to 2 inches of snow with periods of low visibility and high winds, along with slick roads.

Transportation officials say it's bad timing for a snowstorm.
