Bitterly Cold Temperatures, Wind Chills Hit Northeast

PHILADELPHIA (AP)- Arctic air and bitterly cold wind is moving across the Northeast, plunging temperatures into record low single digits, accompanied by subzero wind chills.

Friday's extreme weather brought record low temperatures from western Pennsylvania to New York City and on into Connecticut, forcing a number of school closures

In western Pennsylvania, temperatures dipped to minus 18 in New Castle, minus 15 in Butler and 6 below zero in Pittsburgh - all records.

At Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey was 1 degree Friday morning, beating the previous low of 5 set in 1936. In sections of the state, wind chills reached 10 to 20 degrees below zero.

In New York City's Central Park, the temperature hit a record 2 degrees, beating the previous low of 7 in 1950.
