Austrians go 1-2-3 in Saalbach World Cup downhill training

SAALBACH-HINTERGLEMM, Austria (AP) - Max Franz and two of his Austrian teammates dominated the final training session Friday for a World Cup downhill on the rarely used Schneekristall-Zwolfer course.

Franz clocked 1 minute, 49.41 seconds for a large 0.54-second advantage of Georg Streitberger. Vincent Kriechmayr was third.

Olympic downhill champion Matthias Mayer of Austria and Josef Ferstl of Germany were provisionally third and fourth but they were among numerous skiers to miss gates. Beat Feuz of Switzerland and Brice Roger of France each crashed but both appeared to escape serious injury.

Franz also led Thursday's opening training.

A downhill race is scheduled for Saturday followed by a super-G on Sunday. The last men's downhill on this course was held in 1994, when Ed Podivinsky of Canada won.

The resort hosted the 1991 world championships.
