Deadline for Dog License Applications Quickly Approaching in Sussex

Posted:

GEORGETOWN, Del., Only a few days are left to obtain a state-required license in Sussex County.

The law in Delaware states all dogs 6 months or older must have a valid license issued by the county in which the animal resides on or before Mar. 1. This year dog owners will only have until Feb. 27 to obtain this license because the date falls on a Sunday. However, online applications can be made anytime and will be accepted through the day Mar. 1. The annual cost for these licenses is $10 for spayed and neutered dogs, and $15 for dogs not spayed or neutered.

Dogs must have current rabies vaccinations at the time the license is obtained. Fees will be waived for seeing-eye, lead or guide dogs and those that have previously served in a branch of the U.S. military.

Licenses are available in one, two and three year increments, and are valid through Dec. 31 of the expiration year. Owners who do not comply with the licensing requirements could face an initial $50 fine, with a maximum fine of $100 for repeat offenses within a 12-month period.
