Delaware, Amtrak Reach Tentative Deal on Newark Rail Station

NEWARK, Del. (AP) - Delaware officials have reached a tentative agreement with Amtrak on a plan to expand the Newark train station and boost regional passenger train service.

The News Journal ( ) reports the $35 million project faces a 2018 deadline for spending a $10 million federal grant. The expansion has been envisioned for nearly two decades.

Plans have stalled over the last year as freight carrier Norfolk Southern Corp. expressed concern with how the train station would affect its operations. For now, the carrier says it will evaluate the plan.

Amtrak and state officials say the new plan provides a workable solution to blend passenger and freight rail operations.

State officials say the new train station would also provide a modern gateway to the University of Delaware's growing science and technology campus nearby.
