Jailed Va. Lawmaker to Get Seized Items, or Copies, Back

Posted:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A jailed Virginia lawmaker charged with forgery and perjury is getting back some seized materials and copies of others.

Del. Joe Morrissey says authorities executing a search warrant last month took case files and computers from his law office, bringing his practice to a virtual standstill. A judge in Henrico County on Monday ordered prosecutors to copy data from computers and a copying machine and return them, and make copies of seized papers for the defense.

The 57-year-old Morrissey is charged with fabricating a document that he presented as evidence in December, when he was convicted of contributing to the delinquency of a minor in a sex scandal involving a 17-year-old girl. He is spending nights locked up and attending General Assembly sessions during the day on work release.

'Ghost Pots' Hurting Chesapeake Bay's Blue Crab Population

Crabbing season is well underway, and that means hundreds of thousands of crab pots are in the Chesapeake Bay catching blue crabs.

Every morning during crabbing season, you can see watermen gathering up their pots, collecting their catch, and putting the pots back in the water. What you cannot see is the problem: pots that have had their lines severed sit on the bay's bottom, sometimes never seen again, along with the crabs inside them.
