Video Shows Man Shot by Baltimore Police Charged at Officer

BALTIMORE (AP) - Newly released video footage shows that a man shot several times by Baltimore police on Sunday charged at an officer following a traffic stop.

Deputy Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez said at a news conference Monday that the officer, whose identity has not been released, fired four rounds at the man at around 12:30 p.m. after the officer pulled him over on a traffic violation.

Police on Monday released several seconds of video footage captured by a city-operated camera that shows a police vehicle signaling for a black four-door Nissan Altima to pull over to the side of the road on North Fremont Avenue in West Baltimore. The driver complies, but immediately exits the car and begins walking toward the police car. The video shows the officer stepping out of the car, and the suspect, dressed in a dark sweatshirt, running full-speed toward the officer.

Rodriguez said the officer discharged his weapon "within a second or two," after first trying to back up in what Rodriguez called a "tactical retreat."

The man was struck several times in the torso and was treated for his injuries at a local hospital. Rodriguez said several other officers responded to the scene, and one of them deployed a stun gun on the man following the shooting.

Rodriguez said the officer has been placed on administrative leave, and the suspect will face charges but did not elaborate on what those charges could be.

Rodriguez said though the incident is under investigation, the suspect was "clearly going through some sort of crisis."

"We're trying to identify what it may have been that contributed to this behavior that I can tell you with my nearly 30 years of policing is very unusual, and appears to be very threatening, very menacing," Rodriguez said.

Police have not yet interviewed the officer.
