Coast Guardsman Faces Court-Martial in Va. on Sex Charges

Posted:

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A member of the Coast Guard accused of sexual misconduct is scheduled to face a general court-martial in Norfolk.

Thirty-three-year-old James R. Hamilton is accused of several charges, including aggravated sexual contact and failure to obey an order or a regulation. His case is scheduled to be heard Tuesday at the Coast Guard Legal Service Command.

The Coast Guard says the charges stem from Hamilton's service aboard the Coast Guard cutter Northland, which is home-ported in Portsmouth. The Coast Guard alleges that Hamilton was engaged "in a broad spectrum of sexually related misconduct" while assigned to the Northland.

Hamilton has temporarily been assigned to the Coast Guard base at Portsmouth.

The Coast Guard stressed that Hamilton is presumed innocent and it is committed to a fair hearing of the charges.
