Lewes Crime on the Rise, Police Not Concerned

Posted:
LEWES, Del. - The Lewes Police Department recently released the 2014 crime report, and overall crime is on the rise.

Most notably, robberies moved from zero in 2013 to three in 2014. Burglaries went from 14 to 20. And drug offenses bounced from 49 to 70.

According to police chief Jeffrey Horvath, residents shouldn't be concerned. He also said that the drug arrests were a result of proactive police work. He explained that his officers have been actively seeking out drug offenders to hopefully eliminate the buying, selling and use of drugs in the future.

Sarah Gerrick, an employee at Lewes Bake Shoppe, said she is still on edge, but not surprised.

"People think that they're safe in a small town," she said "Just because it's a small town doesn't necessarily mean that they're gonna be safe."

Chief Horvath did note that a rise in crime could be related to drug use; for example, people robbing others for drug money.

"If it just keeps going up, up, up, and up, then we've got a problem that we need to deal with," he said.

This comes after Rehoboth Beach Police reported an uptick in burglaries just in 2015 alone, more than all of 2014. Rehoboth police also attributed the rise to drug use.
