SALISBURY, Md. - Multiple crews were called to the scene for a fire that broke out shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday at a home in the 200 block of Tilghman Street in Salisbury. According to the Salisbury Fire Department, units arrived to find fire showing from the second floor.

Assistant Fire Chief Bryan Records said there were three adults and seven children in the home. All made it out safely. They were assisted by the Red Cross.

One of the adults said she was sleeping in the second floor room in which the fire started, and woke up to the smell of smoke. She said she believed the fire was sparked by an electrical wire or space heater.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal's office confirmed late Wednesday night that the fire was determined to have started from a space heater left too close to combustibles. Officials ruled the official cause Thursday morning as accidental, saying the space heater had an electrical malfunction.

The State Fire Marshall said the fire took 32 firefighters 25 minutes to get the fire under control but not before it caused roughly $70,000 in damages.
