Current Lack of Funds Could Halt Repairs to Launch Pad

Posted:

WALLOPS ISLAND, Va. – Repair work to the launch pad at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility could soon come to a screeching halt, for the time being.

Orbital ATK spokesman Barry Beneski confirms to WBOC that current funding could run out, causing a delay in repair.

Orbital ATK was the company behind the Antares rocket launch that ultimately exploded back on Oct. 28.

In a phone conversation with WBOC Beneski said “All three parties (NASA, Orbital, and commonwealth with MARS), are working together to find the right approach. We are hopeful we can come to an agreement… and find an acceptable approach to this.”

This being the impending lack of funding to continue repairs right now.

The key part is right now.

In December, President Obama signed off on an additional $20 million to NASA's 2015 budget, at least in part to help with repairs at Wallops.

This approval of federal money came after the state of Virginia asked for it. The problem now is that that money has not yet kicked in.

Damage to the launch pad is estimated at $20 million.

Orbital ATK did have insurance to cover its losses and damage to federal property.

There was a bit of a gray area when it came to covering the cost of the state-owned launch pad itself.

Despite the current uncertainty, officials at Wallops originally said they hoped to repair the launch pad by the end of 2016.
