Historic Designations Sought for Secretariat's Birthplace

DOSWELL, Va. (AP) - The owners of Triple Crown winner Secretariat's birthplace are seeking national and state historic designations for the site.

Secretariat was born in 1970 at Meadow Farm, now known as Meadow Event Park, in Caroline County. The Free Lance-Star (http://bit.ly/1CdEQDJ ) reports that the park's owners have applied to have the 331-acre venue listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register. The application includes Secretariat's foaling shed and barns built in the 1930s.

If the site makes the state list, the owners plan to apply for a listing on the National Register for Historic Places.

The State Review Board and the Board of Historic Resources will consider Meadow Event Park's nomination on March 19.

Secretariat won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes in 1973.
