Suspect Killed in Deputy-involved Shooting in Salisbury

Posted: Updated:
SALISBURY, Md. (WBOC/AP)- Authorities say a Wicomico County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man during a struggle in Salisbury early Tuesday morning.

Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley said 25-year-old Fednel Rhinvil of Salisbury was pronounced dead at around 1:45 a.m. after pulling a handgun from his pocket during a struggle with deputy.

Police said Dfc. Benjamin Jones was treated and released at a hospital for a hand injury.

According to Shipley, Jones saw two men walking on Dennis Street on Salisbury's west side and tried to conduct a street interview with them.

Shipley said one of the men, Rhinvil, ran off but Jones caught him as he tried to scale a fence. Shipley said that during the struggle, Rhinvil pulled out a handgun, and Jones shot him with his department-issued weapon. Shipley said more than one shot was fired but it is not yet known where Rhinvil was hit or how many times.

Shipley went on to say that a loaded and cocked revolver was recovered from the scene.  However, Shipley added that at this time, it is not believed that Rhinvil fired his gun.

Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis told WBOC that he was certain his deputy would have been "executed" if he did not pull the trigger on the suspect.

Jones has been placed on administrative leave while Maryland State Police continue to investigate the incident.
