McCartney Could Lead to Biggest Firefly Yet

Posted:

DOVER, Del. (WBOC) - This year's Firefly Music Festival in Dover could be the largest one yet. And last week's announcement that Paul McCartney would be headlining is playing into that.

General admission tickets went on sale Monday. Mike Tatoian, president of Dover International Speedway, which hosts the event, says he's heard from the organizers, Red Frog Events, initial sales have been good compared to the past three years.

Two-time Rock and Rock Hall of Famer, 21-time grammy winner, music legend McCartney stands out among the groups lined up for Firefly 2015.

Tatoian says McCartney's effect on Firefly boils down to demographics.

"It will be interesting to see what the demographics are going to be on the day that he plays, because I think you'll have folks at my vintage or maybe older, who will enjoy the show as much as a 21 or 22 year old," Tatoian said.

Over at Cool 101.3, a classic rock station based out of Milford, the McCartney announcement was big news.

"The day they announced Paul McCartney was going to be performing we did a special segment of songs in honor of that," said Steve Monz, the station's programming director. "And the phone rang off the hook. And a lot of people were saying now they were interested in going when before they weren't."

Monz also mentions demographics when talking about a McCartney boost for Firefly.

"Paul McCartney brings a completely different demographic to the show. Um, an older audience is going to come see Paul, who has never appeared in Delaware."

Even before McCartney was announced, there was already going to be a huge turnout for Firefly. 2014 saw 80,000 attendees. Red Frog officials tell WBOC 90,000 is a possibility for this year.

"I think what McCartney did just puts things over the top," said Tatoian. "I mean, whether you're a McCartney fan or not, he puts on, from what we hear, an unbelievable show."

Red Frog hasn't said what day McCartney will perform. His website says it will be Friday, June 19.

Firefly has sought a varied crowd before. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were a 2013 headliner in Dover.
