From noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, troopers responded to 491 traffic crashes and 222 disabled vehicles. The majority of the crashes involved damaged vehicles only.

Many of the calls were centered in the Richmond metropolitan area, which extends to Petersburg and the Northern Neck. More than 200 service calls were received, with 148 involving crashes.

That part of Virginia has seen a mix of snow, rain and sleet.

The Salem division has also been busy, with 199 calls for service.

Heavier snow is falling in the western part of the state.
