Lewes Library Withdraws $1 Million Funding Request from City

LEWES, Del. (AP) - The Lewes Public Library will not receive additional city funding to build a new library building.

The Daily Times reports the decision was scheduled for a vote Feb. 25, but the library withdrew its request two days earlier. Library campaign chairman Dennis Forney cited uncertainties around the library project and future use of the current library building in withdrawing the funding request.

Residents in Lewes have been debating the financial benefits and burdens of building the new library.

Forney says the construction schedule for the new library has not been affected. He says the hope is still to be in the new building by June 2016. Fundraising is continuing for the project.
